Visiting family for the holidays! God it’s been forever hasn’t it? (Posting, visiting…)

I’m trialing some new medications this week and taking this time off (about a week for fall break) to review and revisit a lot of old projects I’d put on hiatus, namely some writing stuff and site stuff.

My writing bug for reviews has definitely come back and I’m part-way done with what will be my first in what I’d hoped to be a series of write ups on professionally published Hentai manga from a personal and queer lens more-so than a critical one (though I do occasionally have my criticisms to share)! It feels good to be writing a little bit again even if I still have yet to truly get back to the fiction bug.

I’ve also revisited my Tarot reviews since coming into possession of a new deck The Bound Tarot by Jonathan Grimm.

Along the same lines of touching base with things left abandoned I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately. I’ve once again fallen deep into reading about the afropunk movement and BIPOC experiences in the punk/hardcore music scene. I’m almost done with Black Punk Now which has been a fabulous spiritual successor to 2003’s Afropunk documentary which I got a chance to nab on dvd from James Spooner’s website directly (along with some cool looking zines!)

If you’re at all interested I’d absolutely recommend checking it out and getting yourself a copy! BPN too as a fun follow up!

In general I’ve tried to put myself on a solid book buying hiatus and push myself to work through outstanding books on my reading list that I’ve purchased but have lain untouched in my little dragon hoard.

The rules are simple, no new books (outside of preorders already committed to) until I knock out the current reading list. And from there I’d like to maintain this system to curb the exponential growth of my library vs functional library space. (It’s never that you have too many books, it’s that you don’t have enough shelves!)

Seeing how many truly unread books I’ve had in spite of buying more was definitely eye opening! So here’s what’s on the reading list currently:

In Progress:

Black Punk Now

The Bloody Chamber

Fear and Desire

Unread:

That’s Revolting

Angels Before Men

Shotgun Seamstress

The Day Hikaru Died Vol. 2 (manga)

Life With the Slime (Hentai)

Race Riot 2 (zine)

How to start a Race Riot (zine)

Muchacha Fanzine #16 Decolonizing Punk (zine)

Understanding and Addressing Adult Sexual Attraction to Children

Takarazuka Sexual Politics and Pop Culture in Modern Japan

Dementia 21 (manga)

Finished:

Innocent Omnibus 1 (manga)

The Day Hikaru Died (manga)

The God Eaters

Camp Damascus

What Moves the Dead

On a follow up note, I’m a little over halfway meeting my goal of reading 20 books this year! I’ve only got a few months left, let’s see if I can make it!

Yo new Clann song just dropped and I’m loving it! Go listen to it here!

I discovered this band a few years ago and last year finally acquired their album Seelie. Their work is haunting, soft, ethereal and deeply steeped in classic high fantasy themes, it’s some of my go-to music when I need some solid Gestalt inspiration! Clann’s music is largely connected to an independent multi-media story telling project by a duo of brother’s and their small company Five Knights, the aim seems to be to tell a fantasy story through several mediums including film, music and eventually a graphic novel companion piece which looks really gorgeous and intriguing from the samples on their website for the project! (Side note I really dig their website design, it’s interactive, feels a little minimalist and very sleek, often I’m not a huge fan of more modern web design trends but this one feels very solid for what it presents, I just wish there was a bit more to it!) I’ve been captivated since I was recommended their work by Alys ages ago.

I do wish more of their work was out on CD, I do love collecting CD albums, one of these days I may invest in a solid record player, many of my favorite bands put out vinyl exclusively, much to my chagrin. ^^;

Hoping to come back to more regular blogging soon, I’ve been pretty absent from internet life as a whole for a while due to a lot of IRL business going on in both my professional and personal lives. More frustratingly I’ve also been very creatively dead for a while. But I’m hoping to jump start that with a solid book refurbishing project Dad has pitched for me! More on that later today perhaps!

lukadian: Current Splash Art for www.trsatsuki.net (Default)

Slowly making my way through the Hills of Silver Ruins, A Pitch Black Moon, I’m about midway through book two so far and I’m absolutely loving it, I’ll have to find time to do a proper reaction post, lord knows I’ve been yelling at my all of two? Three friends who’ve even heard of this series and definitely one friend who is just beholden to my yelling and giving me emotional support in this time of fanboy need. (Lol hi [personal profile] miukuromi).

Was genuinely not expecting to fall back as hard and intensely as I have in this series but before I knew it, I’d absolutely pulverized my way through all of Taiki’s arc over the course of the first half of this month which is..l I’m gonna say impressive for me considering my greatly diminished focus capacity and how busy I’ve been latley with work being in the thick of the Busy Season for us!

I’ve doubled if not tripled my Doujinshi collection for this series (including grabbing some absolute treasures of books from ‘95 and ‘97!) and have finally been hunting down the shinchosha paperbacks of the novels, (only missing two of the fifteen now, the second volume of Youko’s first novel and Dreaming of Paradise, the short story collection!) and most recently have picked back up on my effort to typeset the fan-translations of the novels to bind for my very own!

I don’t know when I’ll be able to print and finalize my designs, there’s a lot of moving parts and things I want to include since this has been like, the one big project I’ve wanted to undertake since I got into book binding and..l I want it to be, if not perfect, as good as I can make it! I want it to be as close to my dream release as possible with what’s available to me and within my means of accomplishing.

All this to day, I’m hoping to post a little more frequently here in the vein of fannish ramblings because I am just absolutely beside myself with uncontainable feelings about this series and my OTP and all the cool stuff happening in the new book!

Been getting back into studying Japanese again these days. I picked up a copy of the Genki text and workbook which I haven’t used since high school haha. Tonight I’ve been trying to review some Hiragana. Trying to remember the structure of my old classes to give myself a sense of how to approach self study. I’ve been trying several different studying apps, flash card decks as well!

I’ve also spent a little time revisiting gesture studies, inspired by some of the studies [personal profile] molten_gold  has been doing in her server. Id like to work up to the lighting and shadow style studies she’s been doing in particular, but gestures has always been a good way to get myself into the mindset of art studies!

In the meantime I’ve continued plugging away at writing up some posts to make a DW-centric index of my doujinshi catalog, which will in turn link to various posts where I share or review my books here! I’m about…80-90% done with the Twelve Kingdoms catalog including adding new books which I’ve long put off. It’s just a matter of getting a few more minor details added here and there like page counts, dates and double checking accuracy of title translations, creators credits and the like. There’s also the matter of finishing up a few outstanding book descriptions too which are definitely the more fun part of this project. So keep an eye out for that!

in fannish news, I’ve recently been made an admin of the [community profile] 12kingdoms  comm here on DW! Still feeling really flattered and astounded by this turn of events, initially I’d messaged one of the older mods to clarify a few things before committing to writing up a few more detailed posts (like sharing a few, ahem, more risqué doujinshi over there ahaha!). I’ve also been debating making a call for help in updating a few fandom-centric wiki updates for the series in light of the new books becoming more accessible to the English speaking fandom as Eugene wraps up his translation of the last of them. Particularly the TV Tropes page and fandom Wiki both of which I often reference for double checking details here and there! I’m sure other folk must make use of these as well and I’d really like to see them updated a little… I just have no idea myself how to really edit wikis!

(Basically, everything considering the plot and characters of the Tai Court is very out of date ahaha!)

That reminds me, I should really collect Aili’s translations of the Tai books/Demonic Child for binding!

HEY GUYS MY WEBSITE TURNED THREE YEARS OLD TODAY!!!

I decided to commemorate my website's anniversary today with some art I whipped up and polished last night. instead of sleeping. Its not a very big milestone but I liked the idea and have always wanted to celebrate little website milestones and such. Since my hit-counter broke and I have yet to find/create a suitable replacement I've been unable to do the traditional kiriban games or hit milestones many are familiar with, so in lieu of those for now, I've got website anniversaries!

I had more I wanted to write but I got mad distracted so I may come back to this later. Anyway, enjoy the art~! Details and process break down will go up on my site later in the gallery since I got to use an old process I've not utilized in a minute for creating this image and I'd definitely like to document it somewhere!

Wow guys, I’m totally floored by the support and responds to my last little doujin sharing post! I’m working on some Gen/All ages parody books next. As a reminder, I’m using my general access list as a secondary filter for R18 works, including reviews, artist spotlights and analysis for adult content, including lemony doujinshi! See this post to request access if you don’t already have it, if you’re a mutual there’s a good chance you already do but I’ve been known to forget things, so read and comment on that post to request!

Since there’s a nice little community for it, I’ll be posting Twelve Kingdoms Doujinshi reviews and shares over on the [community profile] 12kingdoms comm as exclusives over there, so they’ll be locked to members and any adult content filters depending on the content of any given book I post on!

I’m still waffling on the idea of supplying scans of full books, even if they’re small and generally not like, the most Quality of images, I’m limited by a heavy old scanner bed that doesn’t play nice with books and look, my priority is preserving the quality of my books!

Secondly, there’s the ethical concerns. A part of me says information wants to be free and valuable niche fandom history like this should be preserved, but as we’ve seen time and time again, scans are a big problem for doujinka and fan artists over seas, I’d hate to contribute to something that takes control the distribution of someone’s work from them… but on the other hand… most of the books I’d be most keen on backing up in this manner are almost a good 20 years old by now. What could it hurt?

Maybe it’s best to leave it at photographs for review purposes or limited scans at least for higher image quality for review purposes… additionally perhaps I could add a generic watermark to dissuade the use of even my couple pages of scans for spreading works around too much? One of the bigger losses in my mind after having left Twitter is losing convenient access to several active doijinka whose work I still follow and support which made it easy to reach out and strike up small conversations, ask for assistance with understanding a story through the language barrier (many djka have been kind enough to write story summaries for me after I expressed interest in their fanworks!)

When it doubt it certainly wouldn’t hurt to ask! But again, in the cases of ,any of these older (10, 15 and 20+ years since publication) works being as old as they are, sometimes pen or circle names changed, sites and emai addresses have gone lapsed and abandoned and the original artists can be all but impossible to find, especially on the western side of the web!

Maybe I’ll cave and make an account on the blasted bird site again for the strictest purposes of communicating with doujinka whose only known contact is twitter but honestly I’d probably be better off following up on email addresses or instead investing in a pixiv account… we’ll see!

At any rate! More doujinshi sharing will definitely be in the future! For those interested, I do have a small subsite dedicated to cataloging my doujinshi collection and offering small comments and such! I do not host scans or images of the interiors currently, it’s really more of an at a glance catalog along the lines of the Doujinshi Lexicon, but be aware a fair amount of my books are R18 and my ships are nasty~! <3

Man, May is almost over, can y’all believe that? My domain’s birthday is coming up, I’ll have had Satsnet online for three years now! And after that of course is the Glorious 25th! I’ll have to do something special, maybe a little doodle?

Every. Single. Time. This series comes and grabs me by the ankles and drags me into its depths.

Catching up with the current translations and I am. So full of emotions. I’ve been hesitant about jumping into the current books without having properly caught back up in my Re-read (last left off on Masho no Ko/Demon Child the sort of prequel and Poseidon of the East so like, absolutely no progress haha) but I visited Eugene’s blog and started back reading and-

I was struck by an illustration from the last book included with an update on the chapter translations and it was gorgeous and full of movement and wait a second is Taiki actually brandishing that sword? Hol’up. And then I read three chapters and I’m.

Still so full of emotions.

It was everything I’d hoped for and more and it clocked me full in the ID.

More on this later because yeehaw I’m back on my bullshit.

… shaping and painting your nails in the tub while listening to 90’s goth playlists. I think this week I’ll go for an Opal/Fire Opal look!

it’s been really nice to get back into painting my nails this year. It’s a small thing, but I’ve found it really relaxing to do on the weekends alongside my usual routine of preparing for the coming work week.

Speaking of work, the new job has been going really well and we just completed our first big project! Next is prepping for summer duties and learning our database program. This week will also be my first intentionally taking some remote work days. For simplicity I’ll simply try alternating this week, go in on Monday, work from home Tuesday and so on. Ideally though I think it will be a little more practical to do the opposite. Mondays are hard for me and being comfortable and not having to commute to the office first thing in the week and later on a “hump day” sound really appealing!

I’ve been feeling incredibly nostalgic lately. Probably a result of the Pokémon fanzine I’m working on!

Beyond that I’ve been listening to a lot of grunge, fell in love with Garbage all over again (apparently they released a new album in 2020!. And guys it SLAPS! Shirley’s still got it. |D) my work tunes are also adopting a lot more happy hardcore which is something I fell deeply in love with in my mid-teens thanks to my friend Gemma. I wonder how she’s doing, I should send her a shout… at any rate I’ve been loving these few playlists and albums! (The latter of which was one of my first exposures to Happy Hardcore back in the day, alongside Bonkers on Gemma’s recommendation!)

Welp that’s all I got. Till next time!

Just a little low-key update to ease back into the habit of posting here!

Knocked out my taxes today and did some much needed spring-cleaning of my filing cabinet (more of a box...really), that took most of the day so I guess it doesn't feel like I've done much this weekend so far! I did do some cooking however and think I've cobbled together a really cool southwest take on onigiri? I'm gonna take another whack at it tomorrow to make some lunches to take with me to work! I wanted to document this lil southwest-nigiri recipe here:

The base is more or less the same as any onigiri you'd make, wash and cook your rice, but in addition to throwing in some dried Kombu seaweed for flavor, toss in some dried ancho chilies while you're at it! Ancho chilli pepper goes into a lot of texmex and makes a nice, mild spicy base for your rice to cook in along with the traditional flavor of kombu! I'd throw in about five peppers to cup of rice/water. For my first try  I did only three and to be honest it didn't show up too much, it was there, but not as strong as I would have liked?

While your rice is cooking, mix your filling! Recently I've been addicted to stuffing my rice balls with smoked salmon, its easy to prep and mix up with just about any flavor I'm craving and can be really good on its own too, plus its sold here in little packs that often make a good amount of filling for anywhere from six to eight rice balls! (I've found I can reliably make maybe three good size onigiri per cup of rice! So depending on how you divy things out you may wind up with more rice or less filling or the reverse! Save leftovers for fried rice later?)

Mince your smoked salmon, add a splash of umami black garlic sauce, a squirt of ranch (I know, trust me) and add: chilli powder, smoked paprika, and cracked black pepper to taste! No salt, the salmon will likely be salty enough on its own and your rice will be plenty salty after handling it! Mix this all up to coat your fish and set it aside to marinate while your rice finishes up!

Once that rice is cooked and cool enough to handle in your hands, make Onigiri as you do! Cold water and salt for your hands and such so it don't stick to you and is easy to shape and firm up, or use those lil molds you can find online! (lightly oiling or sprinkling some salt water in there helps the rice come out once its shaped I've found!)

Toss with sesame seeds and more smoked paprika for color, wrap with nori, top with leftover filling so ya know what you filled it with (if needed/you have leftover tasty filing bits) and serve right away while still warm or store for a nice meal later!

The result is still pretty close to a really traditional onigiri flavor profile but with that unique pop of spices found in southern cooking, the ranch mellows things out a bit and adds its own unique tang too if you're not too big one really spicy things, but really, these only turn out as spicy as you make em so they're adjustable!

I'm kind of writing from the assumption folk passing by may know how to make onigiri, but if not and anyone is curious, just comment and I'll update this with some proper links to videos, recipes and tips that helped me when I started learning how to make these tasty little jelly filled donuts Japanese snacks!

Hey this looks fun, why not! I miss doing memes like this! <3 Taken from X

Comment with one of these numbers or questions and I’ll answer them I guess! Since DW doesn’t really have the kinda Re blogging or tagging system tumblr does I’ll “tag” folks to do this in the DA sense of things, don’t feel pressured, just thought y’all in particular might enjoy this: [personal profile] kradeelav , [personal profile] linky  aaaand [personal profile] tempural!!

11/28/22 Edit - Bolded what’s been asked so I can come back to these with more in depth answers later! Thanks guys!

lukadian: (Professor Tomoe - Sciences)
Lately I’ve been trying to dive deeply back into basics and set aside more structured time for drawing.

I’ve been referencing several YouTube tutorials and channels breaking down gesture, structure and basic shapes, things I never really… properly learned when I first started drawing, self taught as I am.

The end goal has always been “I wanna draw anime style!” Or “some day I’m gonna be a mangaka!” As were probably most of our middle school aspirations. But, public school art credentials never really made basics very fun, and failed to connect them to what I really wanted to draw (animes). So I feel like I’m coming to a lot of these art “fundamentals” much later in life and am only just now connecting them to what I want out of my art.

Even the anime artists I admired as a kid and continue to emulate in my art as an adult have a basic, foundational understanding of anatomy, structure, and various other things that go into drawing figures, paneling comics and creating sequential story telling!

So, in my attempts to create more intentional, structured practice and study time into my routine, I’m gonna just ramble here a bit and try to come up with a schedule or method that works best!

Seeing so many friends new and old joining Dream Width lately! I’m so sorry for all the internet chaos that has pushed many of y’all out of your previous social media homes, but I hope your experience here on DW is refreshing and kind to you all! So excited to see so many place holder names coming alive with some slow trickles of content! I’ll be giving access to known mutuals with similar tastes and interests shortly, if you think you’ve been missed please comment! Access will let y’all see some spicier art with longer notes, personal posts and R18 review content I do from time to time!

As always the bulk of my art and stuff lives at my website! I suppose I’ll be scrubbing the few socmed accounts I’ve had otherwise in stasis for good soon.

Still plugging away at my new Tarot Deck cataloging and review system/template, but most everything has recently taken a backseat to my current IRL project: Installing some new bookcases!

Things have been going well, I’ve discovered I’ll have the space to install a third shelf and have been using these cases here. They’re a bit of a pain to build but I’ve been chalking that up to being out of shape and building these in an excited fugue state after a full day of work haha! But hey, they’ve been worth it!

So far I’m confident I’ll be able to not only rehouse my entire manga shelf on the new shelves but also be able to re-home all of my nonfiction, graphic novels, novels and some of my smaller art books!

Once they’re finished and fully stocked I’m hoping to collect some flameless/Electric candles for mood lighting/ambience. Been leaning a little more firmly into my “witchy” decor tendencies

As for the old shelf… that’s been an ongoing work in progress as well alongside the new shelf installation, I’m trying to convert it into an easily accessible and tidy alternative to craft supply and sketchbook storage. My priorities in order are the following:

Visibility – I want to be able to see what I’ve got in stock at a glance. A problem I’ve run into often with amassing crafting materials has been out of sight, out of mind and its close relative “eeeehn I don’t want to dig out that box”.

Accessibility – Close second, if I can’t see it, it’s likely also difficult to hunt down or dig out, I want to be able to locate, grab and go with exactly what I need.

Safer Storage – Since getting into book binding and zines I’ve amassed an… amount of paper and I’m always conscious of awkward sizes and large bundles of material I can’t use right away and not having a proper dedicated or large enough space has often endangered some of my more fragile materials with risk of bending, or crumpling

Growth Space – Much like with my book cases, I know I’ll be adding to my collection of materials and so I want to design my layout with replacing and adding new materials or tools in mind.

I’ve been trying to avoid sticking things on the top of my shelves for storage, especially my books but honestly, I’m seriously considering making an exception for the largest tools in my crafting arsenal which are currently my book press, my paper guillotine, and my button smasher. All three are large or otherwise a little unwieldly and weird and thus don’t sit perfectly on the shelves, and the only one tall enough to accommodate the button smasher is also the only one tall enough to accommodate many of my more oddly sized sketchbooks, binders of archived, older works and my large format A4 and “oversized” art and reference books, like Always Loyal or my new Twelve Kingdoms art books!

I’ll try to post photos as soon as these projects get closer to completion haha.

Close friends have been getting some of the play by play cause lol I’m just stupid excited to finally have new book cases and a better system going on, its been a huge room rearrangement goal of mine for a long time and once I finally pulled the trigger on cleaning out the closet and getting a new clothing storage system, it was just a matter of getting rid of the old monster room real estate hog, my massively under-used and bulky as fuck second hand dresser + vanity mirror set.

Its just really nice to see a multi-step personal project that involved a lot of saving and planning out finally coming together so well and so quickly! <3

I've long considered writing and posting reviews of tarot decks as I've begun adding them to my collection, and with the addition of two new decks to my collection, I've finally started writing some reviews alongside familiarizing myself with these new decks!

Currently I'm programming a section to host them on my website but I'm curious, would anyone here on DW be interested in cross-posting some of my reviews here as well as public entries? Let me know in the comments!

Welp, the RSS appears to be working, huzzah, blog for my website! You guys will be able to see it in my next site update, just working on a few more things before my next FTP updoot!

So I’ve been playing a lot of Ender Lillies: Quietus of the Knights lately; it’s a fun little sidescroller or Metroidvania type of game that I happened across because the soundtrack for the game appeared in my music recommendations on YouTube. The cover art looked pretty and the name was intriguing so I hit play. I really enjoyed it! The game’s music was haunting, melodic, simple, somber, very… atmospheric! Eventually I happened to glance back at my go-to OST compilation video and caught a glimpse of the game play.

Side-scroller? Single player? Good enough for me!

So I went out on a whim knowing nothing else about the game, bought it for my Switch and have been playing it for about two weeks now!

Just like Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, this game hits that special place in my brain that is stupid excited for side-scrollers. I love the send of loneliness to this game which has inadvertently made me rather attached to the guardian spirits you can collect and add to your arsenal.

The plot is simple, in a post-apocalyptic kingdom you play as “Lilly” last of the white priestesses, guided by a single spirit, you roam your destroyed world curing “Blight” as you go, a zombie-like condition that has turned the land and its inhabitants into little more than mindless murder machines.

Along the way you can collect allied spirits once you’ve purified and rested their mindless, rampaging bodies, usually these are your mini-bosses and main bosses! Each gives you a different type of attack which makes for a fun means of puzzle solving with different combinations or builds. (Your starting spirit, Umbral Knight, for instance is a pretty basic with a decent long-reaching sword and your typical three button smash combo, your second spirit is also your first boss fight, Seigrid a warrior-sister type complete with habit and frock and large fuck-off morning star, she gives you both a spinning leap attack if used while mid air and makes a nice defense you can send out front on the ground to wail on encroaching blighted!)

The story is told through various little scraps you can find here and there which adds to an exploration element which I rather like in games like this, letters from blighted who never made it to their final destinations or keepsakes and talismans used by members of the clergy or local villagers in the cliff-side hamlet. Very…media res story telling haha!

It’s a fun game so far and I’m enjoying it immensely!

So I've finally gone and integrated my blog more firmly with my website, major thanks to [personal profile] vsitante for mentioning Sadgrl's Tutorial on how to do so! It was surprisingly easy, and I'm hoping moving forward this will encourage me to make a few more non access-locked general posts every now and then!

In other news, I finally got my hands on both Twelve Kingdoms art books from Akihiro Yamada, Garden of Eternity and Song of Seiya! Maybe I'll posts photos and a review some time, they're so gorgeous together and I love the complimentary designs~! I'm still so stunned to see a new art book after all these years, having an easy reference to the old and new 2012 re-release covers for the books is also incredibly nice!

I grabbed the new art book from Amazon Japan over here for anyone else interested in picking it up! I highly recommend it if you're at all a fan of 12K or Yamada-sensei's artwork! (The first art book can be found here!)

Very quick site update today: I've got a working sitemap section thats still a bit of a WIP, but hey, hopefully that helps some folks! Was inspired by the likes of my friend [personal profile] linky 's site actually haha!

I've also added: A secret page, the bookshelf has been updated, I should really put more photos up, lord knows I've got nicer ones of my shelf, I added something I wanted for the longest time, its a little bare bones but hey there's an adoptables page with little web doodads I'll be making that you can stick on your site or tools to download!

No link round up this time because I'm pretty tired and want to move on to writing other journals. ^^;

In other news, I've been debating moving from DA to Pixiv these days... anyone out there have any experience using Pixiv and mingling with the jp art/fan community?
